OH among Fulton Bike Rodeo sponsors

The upcoming Fulton Bike Rodeo provides local youngsters an opportunity to learn more about bike safety and take home a free properly fit helmet.

The Fulton Bike Rodeo to be held Saturday, June 3rd from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Fulton Community Center.

A number of refurbished bikes will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. There will also be drawings for several free new bikes, air hop rides, bike registrations, bike obstacles courses, food and more.

Oswego Health is providing the helmets for the rodeo and will have trained staff at the event to properly fit them. By taking part in this event, the health system is supporting an initiative of Oswego Hospital’s emergency department, which is to reduce the number of head injuries. Youngsters can also have a helmet that is in use checked for a safe fit.

New York State law stipulates that those under the age of 14 must wear a helmet when riding a bike or scooter.

Along with ensuring youngsters are wearing properly fit helmets, various agencies will be on hand to provide safety programs and tips. The Oswego County Sheriff’s Department will provide child identification cards through its Operation Safe Child program and the Child Advocacy Center will provide information on how kids can be safe on the Internet.

In addition, the Oswego County Traffic Safety Board will have its popular obstacle course available for those age two to five. Members of the Fulton Police Department will have an obstacle course for older children and youths. Kids can bring their own bikes or use one that will be available at the rodeo.

The Fulton Fire Department and Menter Ambulance Service will have trucks at the event for a close up inside look at these emergency vehicles. Representatives from Doyle’s Bike Shop will also be on hand to conduct bike safety checks.

Sponsoring the event along with Oswego Health, is the Fulton Police Department, the Fulton Benevolent Association, the City of Fulton, Menter Ambulance Doyle’s Bike Shop, Catholic Charities, Fulton Fire Department, Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County, Dunkin Donuts, the Fulton Rotary Club, Oswego County Sheriff’s Department, Oswego County Opportunities Head Start Program, Oswego County Traffic Safety Board, The Fulton City School District, and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Council. Special thanks are due to members of the Fulton Alliance Church who are volunteering their time at the bike rodeo.

In the event of rain, the rodeo will be held inside the Fulton Community Center.
