The residents and staff at The Manor at Seneca Hill are celebrating National Nursing Home Week. Joining these activities are the rehabilitation patients and participants in the Adult Day Health Services Program.
“While we provide excellent care every day, this national recognition week gives us an opportunity to plan a few special celebrations,” said Jason Santiago, Oswego Health Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of The Manor and Springside.
Established by the American Health Care Association (AHCA) in 1967 and always beginning on Mother’s Day, National Nursing Home Week provides an opportunity for residents and their loved ones, staff, volunteers, and surrounding communities to recognize the role of skilled nursing care centers in caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities. The week is celebrated from May 14 through 20.
The Manor at Seneca Hill provides skilled nursing care to nearly 100 individuals. Among those is Bob Canfield, a retired SUNY Oswego professor. His son, Gary, said he is comforted by the fact that someone is always stopping by his father’s room to say hello. “There isn’t a time when I am here visiting that a nurse, aide, social worker or someone from housekeeping -it’s a constant traffic flow- and for the most part they all stick their head in to say hello,” Gary said. “I imagine that is also going on when I am not here and it gives me great comfort knowing people are stopping by.” Gary also said that he likes that the staff took the time to get to know his father and his characteristics so they could meet his individual needs.
Janet Victory, whose mother, Lula Green is also a resident echoed similar sentiments about the area skilled nursing facility. “Everyone at The Manor is so friendly and helpful,” Victory said. “My mother who resides on the third floor receives excellent healthcare and we consider the staff part of the family.” Her mother adds, “I feel very comfortable here.”
Along with receiving great care, Green said she enjoys some of the pampering that’s available at The Manor including manicures and the in-house hair salon.
The Manor’s Social Worker Jessica Fowler said she enjoys getting to know both the residents and their family members, who serve as a great resource. “The families are so helpful and play an important role as we provide care for their loved one here at The Manor,” Fowler said.
Just as dedicated to caring for the residents, rehab patients and adult day participants is the nursing staff, which includes Unit Manager Michelle Mills-McClave, RN. “I see my future and what lies ahead, so I give caring for this age group my all, as someday it will be me needing this care,” she said.
Mills-McClave adds, “The Manor becomes their home and like any home, we want everyone to be comfortable and have all their needs met. The Manor is truly a special place.”
