Oswego Health encourages members to take action on Diabetes Alert Day

The Center for Wound Healing at Oswego Health, a member of the Healogics network, is supporting the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Diabetes Alert Day on March 28.

Diabetes Alert Day represents an important reminder for community members to assess their possible risk for type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin, which results in unhealthy blood sugar levels leading to a variety of medical complications. Risk factors for type 2 diabetes include heredity, age, diet, inactivity, sedentary lifestyle and obesity.

It’s estimated that 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes and of those 29.1 million, nearly 28 percent are undiagnosed. Diabetes Alert Day helps shed light on a national epidemic.

Oswego Health is collaborating with Healogics, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services, to bring wound healing care close to where community members reside. This physician-led service will begin providing patient care this summer at Oswego Hospital.

The Center will treat those with chronic non-healing wounds, which includes diabetic wounds of the lower extremities, as well as conditions such as pressure ulcers, soft tissue radiation injuries, necrotizing infections, compromised skin graphs and flaps, burns, Osteomyelitis, Lymphedema malignant wounds and Venus leg ulcers.

The Oswego Health Center for Wound Healing recommends that community members take the Diabetes Risk Test, which was developed by the ADA. This test evaluates common risk factors and creates an unofficial score to help you determine your level of risk for type 2 diabetes. To take the Diabetes Risk Test, visit diabetes.org/alert.
