Oswego Hospital Earns an "A" for providing Safe, Quality Care

Oswego Hospital has been awarded an ‘A’ for providing safe, high quality care to its patients by the Leapfrog Group.

With this distinction, Oswego Hospital joins hospitals across the country who are providing the highest quality of patient care. It’s the second time this year that the hospital has been awarded an ‘A’ and it’s the only hospital in a 50-mile radius that earned the top grade of ‘A’ from the Leapfrog Group.

“Our physicians, nurses and other clinical staff members have worked diligently to ensure that our patients receive the best care and we are so proud to announce our ‘A’ to the community,” said Oswego Health President and CEO Chuck Gijanto.

Overseeing quality at Oswego Hospital is Chief Medical Officer Renato Mandanas, who has implemented programs to improve care at Oswego County’s sole hospital. “I’d like to thank our staff for their dedication to improving care,” Dr. Mandanas said. “I also encourage community members to use our many excellent healthcare services and experience this care firsthand.”

Developed under the guidance of an Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.

Only six percent of the hospitals in New York State earned an ‘A.’ The Leapfrog Group provided grades for 2,633 hospitals nationwide.

“Protecting patients from harm is the most important charge for any hospital,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We recognize and appreciate ‘A’ hospitals’ vigilance and continued dedication to keeping their patients safe.”

Oswego Hospital is now among several facilities of the Oswego Health system that is being recognized for the quality care they provide. This spring, The Manor at Seneca Hill, earned a 4-star rating for its quality care and a 3-star overall by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid survey (CMS). The highest rating that can be earned is 5-stars. As a result of this accomplishment, the facility was awarded the Health Care Facility of the Year as a part of the Excellence in Health Care Awards presented by the Bankers Healthcare Group.

In addition, Oswego Health Home Care has earned a 5-star rating for quality care it provides to those seeking care in their homes. Oswego Health Home Care is a certified home care agency offering 24-hour skilled nursing, rehabilitation services and support services.

to patients in the comfort of their homes.

“Oswego Health will continue to not only to provide high quality services, but we are looking to next year, as we develop new programs needed in the community, such as Healogics, a wound care initiative that addressed hard-to-heal wounds, as well as a bariatric service,” said Gijanto. “We want to become the community’s first choice for healthcare services.”
