Oswego Health's Maternity Department recognized for its high quality patient care

Oswego Health’s maternity center is being recognized by two healthcare organizations for providing safe and high quality care to new mothers and their babies.

The maternity center was most recently honored by the New York State Perinatal Quality Collaborative (NYSPQC), which in partnership with the state Department of Health aims to provide the best and safest care for women and infants in the state.

The center was presented with the Obstetrical Improvement Project 2015 Quality Improvement Award for its participation in a project that focused on identifying and treating maternal hemorrhage and hypertension, the two leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality in New York.

The maternity center surpassed the required benchmark with 100 percent of its birthing mothers taking part in this quality program. Hospitals in New York State that ensured that at least 80 percent of its birthing mothers were evaluated in labor and were also provided the proper education prior to discharge, were recognized with the award.

To achieve this honor, maternity center staff developed protocols to ensure that all birthing mothers were screened and educated on these important obstetrical healthcare issues. “This award recognizes our physicians, midwives and registered nurses who work to provide each new family not only the safest experience, but also a wonderful and compassionate birth experience,” said Kim Hyde, RN, Clinical Director of the maternity center.

In addition to this quality honor, Oswego Health’s maternity center has once again been named to the Immunization Action Coalition Birth Dose Honor Roll. The maternity center is among the 25 hospitals in the state that achieved a 90 percent or higher coverage rate in 2015 for the birth dose of hepatitis B vaccine. To be a part of this honor roll, the maternity center must also provide high quality care to patients.  Oswego Health has been honored with this award for many years as it recognizes the importance of early HBV vaccination.

Oswego Health’s maternity center offers families a comfortable and homey environment, featuring attractive private rooms, each with its own bathroom containing a large soaking tub. This environment is complemented by the latest technology. A caring and knowledgeable staff oversees the entire family's needs.

The maternity center recently unveiled a new C-section recovery room for new mothers and their babies, offering a quicker bonding experience for the new family.
