Combating the Opioid Epidemic

Oswego Health and Farnham Family Services will provide an Ask The Doctor program on the opioid issue at 6 p.m. January 24th at G.S. Steamers in Oswego.

Community members are invited to attend the panel discussion, Combatting the Opioid Epidemic, to learn more about this issue.

Speaking will be Michael Nupuf, MD, a member of the Oswego Health Medical staff who serves as a medical director at Farnham; Mark Raymond, a certified substance abuse counselor who coordinates Farnham’s opioid treatment program, and James Syrett, MD, an Oswego Health emergency medicine physician.

Dr. Nupuf, who has been providing physician care in the Oswego area for more than 40 years, will discuss the science behind addiction and what causes it. Mark Raymond, who has 20 years of experience working in addiction services, mostly specializing in treating opioid substance use disorder, will share details of Farnham’s new program. Last fall, Farnham began a medication-assisted treatment program, which is a combination of behavioral therapy and medications to treat those with substance use disorders. The program currently treats about 70 individuals.

Dr. Syrett, a board-certified emergency medicine physician who also completed a fellowship in EMS medicine, will discuss how the opioid issue is impacting the local emergency room and how it is being addressed. Dr. Syrett has been providing care in the emergency room setting for more than 20 years.

There will be plenty of time available for questions from the audience.

The Ask The Doctor Forum is a free presentation sponsored by the Oswego Health Community Development Office.
